Every testing site reports the same core figure for a match: the total shared centimorgans, or cM, a measure of how much DNA the two of you have in common across all your chromosomes. A half-sibling shares roughly a quarter of their DNA with you, which in centimorgan terms lands in a broad band that the published reference data places somewhere around eleven hundred to twenty-four hundred cM, clustering near an average in the high seventeen-hundreds. When your match sits inside that window, “half-sibling” is a reasonable first guess, and it is exactly the guess the testing companies surface in their relationship predictor.
Here is the trap. That same quarter-of-your-DNA window is shared by an entire family of relationships, because they all pass down about the same fraction by a different route. An aunt or uncle, a grandparent, a niece or nephew, and a so-called three-quarter sibling can all produce a total in the half-sibling range. The cM number tells you the genetic distance between you, but distance alone cannot tell direction, generation, or which side of the family the connection runs through. Two secondary figures help you start narrowing before you do anything else. First, Rule Out a Full Sibling

That difference is decisive and it survives the cM overlap. A full sibling and a half-sibling can post a similar-looking total, but the way that total is built is completely different. Run the two kits through a chromosome browser or a tool that reports fully-identical regions, and the answer is usually obvious within minutes: a wall of fully-identical segments says full sibling, while half-identical matching with no significant fully-identical blocks says half. The way out of this list is not the centimorgan total, which is what put you on the list in the first place. It is generation and side. Age narrows the field fast: a match two decades older than you is far more likely to be an aunt, uncle, or grandparent than a half-sibling, while a match much younger leans toward niece or nephew. Which Parent Do You Share?

Build the Tree Out From Shared Matches

Start by grouping the shared matches into clusters that descend from the same couple. Two or three solid matches whose own trees converge on a single ancestral pair give you a target family. From that couple you work downward, building short trees for their descendants until a branch lines up with the timing and geography you established for the shared parent.
